How to Fire A Friend

Firing a friend can be very difficult. There comes a time in everyone’s life when you have to assess if the people you are working with are actually providing value and if they are helping you to achieve your goals.

There are over 40,000 registered financial advisors in Canada. With so many, it’s quite likely that most people know someone in the industry. Working with your nephew, cousin, neighbour, or school friend can work for a period of time. Perhaps that is who you are currently working with. Indeed, these relationships are more than working relationships. You’ll possibly have to see these people at family functions, or a friend get-together. We get asked on many occasions what people should say to their existing advisors when they move their investments. My thought is that old phrase “honesty is the best policy”.

Be honest! If you feel that something has been missed or that you were not getting the attention that you were looking for, let them know. This can help that person improve their business and make changes to not lose additional clients.

A number of times we see people coming over to us because their situation has changed. Whether it’s because they have become widowed or because they received a promotion and are now feeling they need to focus seriously on their financial situation. It’s no longer just about saving money and hoping that there will be enough to live off in retirement. It’s about using the money and resources to work for them, focusing on exactly what it is that they want to achieve and ensuring they are on track.

At Dedicated Financial Solutions we work with your accountant and lawyer to ensure that we are all on the same page and working towards your goals in the most efficient manner possible.
